At Tongmai, a geologically unstable section of the Sichuan-Xizang Highway, soldiers overcame floods and landslides to build bridges and roads in the 1950s. A monument commemorates the ten soldiers who died while transporting supplies. The site also gave rise to a well-known slogan: "Let the mountains bow their heads, let the rivers make way."
