Tens of thousands of migratory birds arrived at Zhanjiang's Nansan Island (南三岛) in early November.

Sitting at a key point on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, Nansan Island has long been known for its fertile waters and rich soil. The island's migratory bird season runs from October to April each year. In October and November, the island serves mainly as a stopover for migratory birds, while December–March marks the peak wintering period.

The island's continuous mudflats, shallow-water wetlands and relatively intact coastal habitats give large numbers of plovers, gulls and herons plenty of room to forage and roost.
