Dongguan festival shows Song elegance with modern

A lively festival in Dongguan gave locals and tourists a taste of ancient China with a modern twist. Over the Dragon Boat Festival weekend, the event transformed a historic district into a playground of Song Dynasty culture and trendy entertainment.

As part of the Weekend in Greater Bay Area series, the festival buzzed with activities. Dozens of stalls sold silk fans, handmade jewelry, and fusion snacks like zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves). Visitors watched folk musicians perform alongside rock bands.

Staff in flowing Hanfu robes guided guests through recreated Song-era games. Children kicked cuju balls (an early form of soccer), tried their luck at guanpu dice, and laughed over poetry challenges.

Over three days, thousands attended—many from nearby cities. Parents praised the mix of play and education.
