A Japanese company has developed an automated system to help municipalities respond faster to bear sightings by combining artificial intelligence, drones, and a mobile app for residents, local media reported.
According to Kyodo News, the service, developed by NTT Docomo Business Inc., uses cameras installed in bear-prone areas alongside drones capable of automated flight. When an animal is detected, AI analyzes the images to determine whether it is a bear.
Once a bear is identified, the system sends alerts to police and fire departments and pushes notifications to residents via the app.
The company plans to launch the service in April and aims to have it adopted by more than 100 municipalities.
Japan saw a record number of bear sightings and attacks last year, leading to a surge in bear-related casualties and growing public concern.
