The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will feature 22 more medal events than Paris 2024, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Wednesday.

A total of 351 medal events are in the LA28 program and the athlete quota is 10,500, with an extra 698 quota places allocated for five sports -- baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash -- proposed by the LA28 organizing committee.

The IOC also announced all team sports will have at least the same number of women's teams as men's teams for the first time in Olympic history.

Gender equality was a key consideration when deciding on the athlete quota and the number of events, the IOC said. In the initial sports program, the number of female athletes is 5,333, compared with 5,167 male athletes.

LA28 will also feature mixed events in archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), golf, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint and table tennis.

In swimming, the 50m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke events will all have both men's and women's competitions.

In rowing, the women's solo (CW1x), men's solo (CM1x) and mixed double sculls (CX2x) will make their debut in coastal beach sprint.

In basketball 3x3, the participating teams are expanded from eight to 12 teams per gender at LA28, while in sport climbing, boulder and lead events will now be contested as separate medal events.

The IOC also indicated that 24 out of 31 Olympic International Federations had put forward a request for a change in their event program from Paris 2024. In total, 46 new events were requested (16 male/17 female/13 mixed), six of which were to potentially replace existing events, making a net total of 40 more events requested. In total, 772 additional quota places were requested for the initial sport and event program of 10,500 athletes (339 male/433 female).

The IOC approved the inclusion of boxing at LA28 in March 2025, taking the total number of sports up to 31.
