From AI to APEC: Why a Czech journalist is fascinated by Guangdong

As China's annual "Two Sessions" bring together policymakers, journalists, and observers from around the world, the event also offers international media a chance to better understand different parts of the country.

Among the foreign reporters covering the meetings this year was Helena, a journalist from the Czech Republic. During the Two Sessions, she attended several Guangdong-themed events, where her initial curiosity about the province gradually developed into a deeper interest.

"Of course, I know that Guangdong province is really highly developed," Helena said. "Your GDP is practically leading all of China."

Located in southern China, Guangdong is widely known as one of the country's most dynamic economic regions and a major hub for manufacturing, technology, and international trade. According to Helena, Guangdong's influence is also increasingly recognized in Europe.

"Your AI groups that are developing AI, robots, or cars are really famous in Europe," she noted.

During the events, Helena explored a variety of innovative technologies from Guangdong companies, including AI-powered translation glasses and other smart devices. For her, these products offered a glimpse into how the province is driving forward in fields such as artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

She was particularly impressed by a pair of translation glasses that can help people communicate across languages.

"I think these glasses can create a bridge between different people and visitors," she said. "They can help people understand other cultures."

Helena also noted that China's use of technology is not only focused on the future but also on preserving the past. She pointed out how artificial intelligence can help protect cultural heritage and historical memory for future generations.

Beyond technology, what impressed her most was Guangdong's openness.

"You are open," she said. "That's really interesting for the whole world. For example, for Europe, you are open and you want to share your business with us."

Looking ahead, Helena is also paying close attention to the APEC 2026 meetings, which will be held in Shenzhen, a major city in Guangdong Province. She believes the event will play an important role in promoting dialogue and cooperation at a time when many parts of the world face geopolitical tensions and trade disputes. "In other parts of the world, we have many conflicts and problems in trade," she said. "But with APEC, it seems you are able to talk with your neighbors around China."

For Helena, this kind of dialogue is crucial. "It's really important that you are keeping your part of the world in peace," she said. "You can talk together, you can do business together, and you are not arguing."

After the journey of the Two Sessions, Guangdong is no longer just a place on the map for Helena. Through the technology, people, and stories she encountered during the Two Sessions, the province has become something much more real and meaningful.

While the Two Sessions of 2026 have come to an end, the conversations it inspires between China and the world continue.
