As the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) prepares to convene its annual summit in China's Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, Mushahid Hussain, co-chairman of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties and chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute, shared his perspective on the group's growing global relevance in an exclusive interview with South.
He argues that the SCO's guiding philosophy—the Shanghai Spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for the diversity of civilizations, and pursuit of common development—continues the Bandung Spirit, laying the groundwork for a fairer and more inclusive international order.
Hussain notes that at a time when the post-World War II order is under strain, the SCO is expanding its membership, deepening cooperation, and giving greater voice to countries in the Global South.
Far from being "anti-West," he says, the organization contrasts with Western-led models by promoting connectivity and cooperation across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
From energy projects and infrastructure like the Gwadar Port to education and counterterrorism initiatives, Hussain highlights how the SCO has evolved from a regional security body into the world's largest regional organization by geography and population.
