Nestled in the Pearl River Delta of southern China—where the Xijiang, Beijiang, and Dongjiang Rivers flow into the South China Sea—the cities of Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen have long served as gateways for cultural exchange. Once vital hubs along the ancient Maritime Silk Road, these cities are home to millions of overseas Chinese.

Now through May 6, the Guangdong Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum presents a special exhibition titled "Where China Meets the World—Exhibition of Intangible Cultural Heritage from Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen Cities." This exhibition tells the story of how everyday traditions from these three cities have both shaped and been shaped by migration and cultural exchange around the globe.
Clay sculptures
The exhibition is divided into two main sections. The first, titled "Embracing All Cultures," explores how the people of Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen have blended Chinese and Western traditions in their daily lives. Visitors will see beautiful examples of local craftsmanship, such as clay sculptures known for their fine detail and unique blend of cultural influences, as well as the famous Zhongshan suit, which became a symbol of modern Chinese identity. You'll also discover how food plays a key role in preserving memories—dishes like Huangpu cured meats carry the tastes and smells of home, even for those who have moved far away. The second part of the exhibition, "Venturing Afar," examines how these traditions traveled with migrants across the globe.
