Diplomats fall for Shenzhen: Unlocking beauty of APEC "China Year" host city

A group of 12 diplomats and their spouses from eight countries, including Guyana, Bulgaria and El Salvador, visited Shenzhen on May 15 and 16 as part of the 2026 "Discover China Cultural Tour" for Diplomats in China, themed "Meet Vibrant Guangdong".

The delegation visited Shenzhen Bay Culture Square, Shenzhen Talent Park, Tencent Binhai Headquarters, the Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall, and Shekou International Cruise Home Port. They experienced drone food delivery, digital art exhibitions and Tencent's palm payment technology.

"Shenzhen has successfully combined innovation with quality of life," said Luis Lopez, Ambassador of El Salvador to China. He noted that technology in the city is deeply integrated with culture, sustainability and urban livability.

Dwayne Thompson, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in China, was impressed by Guangdong's rich culture and Shenzhen's development achievements.

Ambassador Lopez also praised Shenzhen's reform story, saying openness and international cooperation can accelerate economic transformation.

The tour ended with a cruise to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. As Shenzhen prepares to host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, Lopez said the city perfectly embodies APEC's spirit of openness and partnership, serving as a global platform for innovation, trade and connectivity.
