Taste of love: Come and savor lychees in Guangdong's Maoming

Guangdong is currently entering the lychee harvest season. Maoming, the main lychee-producing area in Guangdong, holds a prominent position in the lychee industry due to its long history, vast cultivation area, and high production output.

Covering a lychee cultivation area of over 93,333 hectares, Maoming is the world's largest lychee producer.

Located in the transitional zone between tropical and subtropical regions, the city receives abundant rainfall and enjoys ample sunshine. The red soil in the hilly areas has a deep soil layer and a slightly acidic nature, providing ideal hydrothermal and soil conditions for the growth of lychees.

Thus far, Maoming boasts the most comprehensive variety of lychees, with more than 80 different types growing within the city.

This fruit is also intertwined with the love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Concubine Yang Guifei from the ancient Tang Dynasty. According to legend, to bring a smile to his beloved concubine, Emperor Xuanzong dispatched couriers to transport lychees from Guangdong to the capital, Chang'an, which is present-day Xi'an. Nowadays, lychees are increasingly regarded as a fruit symbolizing love.

Recently, at the invitation of GDToday, a group of international vloggers visited Maoming. Just how sweet are these lychees? How diverse are the lychee products? And how is Maoming striving to build infrastructure to transport fresh lychees to the world? Follow along in the video to find out.
