"ASEAN brings together countries with different foreign policy orientations and different foreign policies. In the past, ASEAN has succeeded in making our diversity our strength. But at the moment, the risk is that this diversity is becoming a source of division," said Marty Natalegawa.
Marty Natalegawa served as Foreign Minister of Indonesia from 2009 to 2014. He has been cited as "one of the most respected foreign policy and international security thinkers of his generation."
For Natalegawa, preserving peace is the fundamental condition for Southeast Asia's continued development. Even when disputes cannot be resolved immediately, ASEAN members should agree to manage their differences through political dialogue rather than allow them to escalate into conflict.
