At a bustling intersection in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York City, on October 2, the Canton Avenue Co-naming Ceremony was held to honor earlier Chinese immigrants, including 19th-century Cantonese laborers who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad in the United States.
The naming applies to the intersection of Bay Parkway and 86th Street to celebrate the Chinese American community and its history. The original name Bay Parkway remains, with Canton Avenue added as a commemorative designation.
Tearing off the cover of the signpost, Larry He Lining, a first-generation immigrant running for NY Senate District 17, highlighted the contributions of the 19th-century Cantonese laborers who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad.
He has dedicated himself to legislative efforts in New York State and New York City to designate May 10 as the Transcontinental Chinese Railroad Workers Day.
