The APEC Economies China Studies Scholars Forum kicked off in Guangzhou on June 11, bringing together nearly 100 experts from 16 APEC economies to discuss "China's Development and the Shared Future of the Asia-Pacific".
Peruvian scholar Oscar Vidarte Arévalo, Professor and Director of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, shared his insights with South on the Chancay Port project, which he believes will play a transformative role in China-Peru trade ties.
"In three or four years, Chancay Port will change the dynamics of ports in the South Pacific, especially in terms of trade with China," said Arévalo. He noted that direct shipping from Peru to Asia could slash travel time to 20-22 days, completely reshaping trade costs and logistics. The port, he added, provides new opportunities for China, particularly Guangdong, to trade not only with Peru but also across the South Pacific, and could one day connect to a planned transcontinental railway that would break the Panama Canal's monopoly.
