The 17th Nanzhuang Five-Person Dragon Boat Race kicked off on September 27. A total of 282 teams set off simultaneously and staged a 30-kilometer race on the Jili River, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest five-person dragon boat race.
Known for its light boats, long distances and endurance, the five-person race reflects the pragmatic, cooperative and resilient spirit of the Lingnan people. The race is also a key part of this year's "Che Shui Ma Long" festival in Nanzhuang. The festival also features the fire dragon dance, an intangible cultural heritage, along with a car shopping fair and water town tours.
On the evenings of September 25 and 26, the fire dragon dance was performed in Nanzhuang to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Stretching about 100 meters, the dragon required more than 200 dancers to work together. In Chinese mythology, the dragon is a symbol of auspiciousness. Dating back more than 500 years, the custom expresses people's wishes for peace and good fortune.
