"China will be the country to deal with in all of your remaining lifetimes," said Richard D. Wolff, the prominent American economist, in his incisive analysis of China's unprecedented rise. Speaking at a Global Capitalism lecture, Wolff highlighted how China stands apart as the only nation to have successfully lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty while forging a unique economic model.
"They grew faster than anybody has. They're not the American model, but they're not the Soviet model either," Wolff observed, emphasizing China's hybrid system - balancing private enterprise with state coordination. Unlike Western capitalism, China prioritizes societal development over pure profit: "We don't give a damn about profit. We care about making society evolve in a certain way."
Wolff's critique underscores China's strategic governance, blending market openness with public welfare - a formula he argues makes China the defining economy of this century.
