What impressed APEC journalists in Hengqin? TCM, tech and connectivity

A delegation of journalists from APEC member economies visited the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin on April 22, exploring how Guangdong and Macao are deepening cooperation in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry.

During the visit, reporters toured TCM research and production facilities to see how TCM practices are being modernized through scientific innovation and rigorous quality control standards.

"It's quite amazing to see how something traditional can be turned into a global industry," said Abu Hassan Mohd Ridzuan, a journalist at Sinar Harian in Malaysia.

"There is big potential for Malaysia to learn from and maybe collaborate with China in this industry." added the Malaysian journalist.

Participants also highlighted the global relevance of such developments. "In Latin American countries, we have some of these techniques, but not on this scale," said Josimar Elias, a journalist at Diario Gestión in Peru, noting that China's approach could "contribute to medicine around the world."

Dexter Barro of the Manila Bulletin said the integration of traditional and modern practices was "the most impressive" part of the visit.

Later, the delegation toured the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to examine cross-border connectivity.

Francisca Cardenas, a journalist at CNN Chile, pointed to "an efficient logistics solution for fresh products," while others emphasized how the integrated zones facilitate trade and personnel mobility.
