Chinese tech company HONOR officially launched its Robot Phone in Guangzhou on August 12, bringing a motorised camera, cinematic imaging and embodied AI into a 6.3-inch smartphone.
Marketed by HONOR as the world's first "robot phone," the device features a 200-megapixel main camera mounted on a four-degree-of-freedom titanium gimbal.
The camera can extend from the phone, rotate 360 degrees and automatically track subjects, essentially squeezing a robotic camera operator into a pocket-sized device.
HONOR has also partnered with German cinematography giant ARRI, whose camera systems are widely used in professional filmmaking.
The collaboration brings technologies including ARRI LogC3, Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks to the phone, giving users access to professional cinematic workflows on a mobile device.
At the launch, international tech influencers and journalists were impressed by more than just the camera.
British influencer Tom Wright described the device as "exciting and innovative," while Malaysian creator Ke En said combining a phone, robot and gimbal in one device felt "really magical."
The phone's AI assistant can also operate across apps to carry out tasks for users.
For many of the international visitors, the experience offered a broader glimpse into China's rapidly developing technology ecosystem.
Uzbek tech influencer Temur Khatamov predicted the device could "change the mobile camera industry" within the next five to ten years.
