Paul S. Weiss, University of California Presidential Chair in Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has emphasized the irreplaceable value of international scientific exchanges amid strained global relations, recalling the substantial benefits he has gained from research collaborations with Chinese scientists and students.
UCLA has upheld a long-standing international tradition. Weiss's lab has hosted students from more than 60 countries, with Chinese students making up the largest group. According to him, multicultural academic mobility benefits all sides and helps unite the world.
Weiss holds that turbulent times make on-site investigation more meaningful. "When situations become highly disrupted, it may actually be the best moment to travel and observe real-world conditions on the ground, instead of relying solely on newspapers, television or online information." Scholars can carry authentic first-hand observations back home after overseas visits or job postings. Therefore, he advocates the continuation of two-way academic exchanges.
Weiss spoke highly of the contributions made by global talent, including researchers from China. He observed that most chief executives of top Silicon Valley companies are immigrants who came to the U.S. for education. America's advantage lies in absorbing worldwide talent: some choose to stay, while others return home and establish long-term research links. Both scenarios greatly benefit U.S. scientific development.
"I cannot speak for the federal government since I am not its employee," Weiss remarked. Throughout his career, he has formed extensive connections with global scientists through joint research or meetings at international conferences. The disappearance of such academic ties would be a devastating loss.
Admitting that current scientific cooperation is at a low ebb, Weiss stayed cautiously optimistic. "I believe a more stable situation will return. That is my sincere hope."
