Indonesia seeks cooperation with Guangdong to scale up cultural industry, says KADIN official

Ivan Chen, Head of the Standing Committee on Development and Utilization of Culture at KADIN (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry), said Indonesia has much to learn from China. "Twenty years ago, China's cultural industry was not that well known in the world. But for the past 10 to 15 years, we can see that China is leading the industry," he said, citing Labubu, the Ne Zha movies, Black Myth: Wukong, and Tencent's Honor of Kings as examples.

He described soft power as a dialogue of cultures, noting that China has the Tang Dynasty and the Silk Road, while Indonesia has the Spice Route and the Srivijaya and Majapahit eras.

"Soft power must be something that has equality in terms of conversation," he added. He revealed that KADIN will establish an Indonesian committee this year to pursue cooperation with Guangdong and China in general, aiming to scale up Indonesia's cultural industry through co-productions, co-development, and investment. "We can see that the opportunity is there."

The "Guangdong Meets the Asia-Pacific: Guangdong Goods, Global Reach" Indonesia Promotion Event was held in Jakarta on September 22, showcasing over 60 Guangdong products, from Lingnan cuisine and trendy toys to lifestyle goods and smart technology.
