Chen Meizhuan, an Indonesian Chinese, shared her father's story at the "Guangdong Goods, Global Reach" Indonesia promotion event.
"My father—that generation—when he came, what era was it? He was only 22 years old," she said. He left there for Nanyang, but not Jakarta—he went to Kalimantan. She has visited Guangdong many times, including Shantou and Jieyang, where her father came from.
"After moving to Indonesia, every time he sent money back home—because he had parents and grandparents there—he often ate very little and saved as much as he could to send the money back," she recalled. "I was still young, but I knew—I knew that every time he would ask a friend to write a letter and send money to Jieyang."
The event, held in Jakarta on September 22, showcased over 60 Guangdong products, from Lingnan cuisine and trendy toys to lifestyle goods and smart technology. Among the exhibits, the Qiaopi—letters and remittances from overseas Chinese—evoked memories of past generations among Indonesian Chinese.
Chen's story of hardship and devotion was echoed throughout the exhibition, reminding visitors of the deep ties between Guangdong and the Chinese diaspora in Indonesia.
