How China drives global governance and development at SCO summit

China took center stage at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, which concluded on September 1 in China's northern port city of Tianjin, unveiling its Global Governance Initiative aimed at promoting a more just and equitable international order.

This is China's fourth major global initiative, following the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative.

In interviews with South, experts and journalists from around the world hailed the initiative as a timely response to rising geopolitical tensions and a call for cooperative development across the Global South.

Beyond governance, development and economic cooperation were also central themes of the summit.

China announced a series of livelihood and vocational training programs, including the expansion of Luban Workshops, and pledged two billion yuan (about 281 million U.S. dollars) in grants to other SCO member states within the year 2025.

Observers noted that China's growing economic engagement not only strengthens trade ties but also supports political and social stability, reinforcing the SCO's role as both a stabilizer and a driver of development in an increasingly uncertain world.
