Step into Gaoming's Mingcheng | How an ICH inheritor brings paper lion head to life

Foshan lion heads are traditional folk arts and crafts with a history of over 200 years. They are characterized by plump heads, wide grinning mouths, and large, bright eyes.

Tan Zhiming is a representative inheritor of Foshan's Intangible Cultural Heritage and the third-generation inheritor of Dashengli Lion Shop, a century-old establishment. He has been exposed to various papercraft techniques since childhood and has been engaged in the paper lion head craft for more than 50 years.

Master Tan preserves this century-old craft with the warmth of his fingertips. Soaking bamboo strips takes seven full days and nights; paper pasting requires each layer to dry completely before the next layer can be applied; and painting demands meticulous brushwork... Every step in the process embodies the inheritance of craftsmanship.
