Zhong Yaohui, Secretary-General of the Khmer-Chinese Association in the Kingdom of Cambodia, said the century-old organization is the largest Chinese community group in Cambodia, with more than 50 branches and 57 Chinese schools.
As Cambodia and China mark the 68th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, he noted that the association hosts root-seeking trips almost every year, as well as student summer camps and overseas Chinese youth exchange forums, with visits to Chaoshan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other places in Guangdong.
"We hand down and promote the culture inherited from our ancestors in Guangdong," he said. At an event featuring red peach-shaped rice cakes and mooncakes, he explained that students used to know only that these goods were sold in markets, without knowing their origins or cultural meanings. Through such exhibitions, they can learn that these items came from Guangdong and develop a deeper affection for their ancestral hometown, he added.
