The 47th World Congress of Vine and Wine and the 24th General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), alongside the 6th China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo, opened in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, on October 12. The congress is being held in Asia for the first time.
"It's a landmark for us," said Yvette van der Merwe, President of the OIV. "You bring a different perspective and fresh new eyes on the vines, winemaking, and the consumer. I think we can learn from that."
Ningxia is China's largest contiguous wine-grape-growing region, with more than 600,000 mu (around 40,000 hectares) of vineyards, accounting for nearly 42 percent of the country's total. The region produces around 140 million bottles of wine annually, nearly half of China's winery-produced wine.
