A waterspout was spotted over the Xijiang River in Liudu Town, Yun'an District, Yunfu City, Guangdong Province, on October 4, according to a local witness.
The witness, identified by the surname Chen, said the waterspout appeared at around 4 p.m. "It was frightening—very tall and almost surreal. Boats nearby were moving away to avoid it."
The Guangdong Meteorological Service also shared information about the waterspout on its official account on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform. An official update is pending.
A waterspout is a tornado that forms over water, usually over the sea or a lake. It can draw water upward into a column that may extend toward the clouds.
The Guangdong Meteorological Service has warned that even relatively small waterspouts can be extremely powerful, potentially damaging boats and posing a serious threat to lives. People who spot one should move away immediately.
