As the Chaoshan-language film 'Dear You' surpasses RMB 1.2 billion at the Chinese box office by May 28th, public interest in the history of Chinese migration to Southeast Asia has been reignited.
While the story is set mainly in Thailand, the legacy of "Nanyang" migration can still be found across the region, especially in Singapore, where historic temples, remittance houses, and cultural landmarks continue to preserve memories of early Chinese communities.
From old Qiaopi remittance shops to century-old temples built by Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese, and Hakka immigrants, these sites reflect the hopes, struggles, and beliefs of those who crossed the sea in search of a new life.
