At 48, former cycling champion Leung Chi-hang is leading Hong Kong's orienteering team at the 15th National Games. The squad, featuring everyone from teenage students to medical professionals, represents the growing appeal of the niche sport.
Leung, who won two cycling golds in previous National Games, completed his middle-distance race by 9 a.m. on Friday.
His teammates include a 17-year-old secondary student and working professionals like nurses and physiotherapists who train around their day jobs. Selected through open trials, the Hong Kong team will compete in relays and team events later this week.
"Orienteering's magic is that every venue presents new challenges," said Leung, who first tried the sport in 1990. "That freshness keeps us all coming back."
