US plastic surgeon on China-US 'excellent partnership' behind AI glasses in Shenzhen

Dr. Frederick De Jacma, a US plastic surgeon who has lived in China for 23 years, is impressed by a pair of AI translation glasses developed through China-US collaboration. "When you take AI software engineers from Silicon Valley and combine them with manufacturing in China—you've got the ultimate product," he says.

The glasses are made of 24k gold, super lightweight, with batteries lasting 3–4 days. They support 137 languages and provide fast, accurate translation. Dr. De Jacma uses them to communicate with his Chinese patients. "The quality, speed and durability can't be reproduced anywhere else. The Chinese have mastered the production," he notes.

While AI algorithms come from a Silicon Valley team, manufacturing and supply chain are handled in China. "It's an excellent partnership—when you take the smartest minds from the US and from the Chinese market, this is the type of product you can develop," he says. Now sold globally, Dr. De Jacma believes China will lead the world in such products.
