At 02:48 on April 14, a fire broke out in a multi-storey car park and an unused equipment area at BYD's No. 20 factory in Pingshan District, Shenzhen. The blaze was brought under control by firefighting personnel, and no casualties were reported.
Preliminary investigations by local authorities suggest that the fire was caused by improper handling of materials during the dismantling of idle equipment by an external contractor, who ignited insulation material. Officials confirmed the fire was not related to vehicle or battery self-combustion.
The incident produced heavy smoke, leading to the temporary closure of a nearby school and traffic restrictions on certain roads. Local businesses were unaffected.
BYD issued a statement confirming that the car park was used exclusively for test vehicles and scrapped cars awaiting disposal. The company said that the fire had been extinguished and no injuries occurred.
