Indonesian official: From ancient villages to modern China, a remarkable inheritance of technology and innovation

Visiting an ancient village in Guangzhou on February 6, Ratih Damayanti was struck by the durability and beauty of buildings constructed more than 600 years ago. She said that China's technological sophistication long predates the modern era.

Damayanti, director of environment, maritime, natural resources, and nuclear policy at Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency, is attending the First Senior Officials' Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM1) of APEC China 2026, being held in the southern Chinese city from February 1 to 10.

"From one to ten, I would give it a ten," she said, reflecting on how the visit helped her understand China's long civilizational arc—from daily life in ancient times to the country's contemporary modernization.

She added that the experience offered lessons she hoped could one day be reflected in Indonesia's own development.
