APEC SOM1 official: Guangdong's mangrove conservation shows how China balances development and nature

"Agriculture can have negative impacts on mangroves and natural ecosystems, but in Guangdong, significant steps have been taken to address this," Yuan Derun, senior programme officer at the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific, told South in Guangzhou on February 6.

He is attending the First Senior Officials' Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM1) of APEC China 2026, being held in the southern Chinese city from February 1 to 10.

Yuan noted that Guangdong has established natural parks and mangrove restoration and conservation areas, and is working to integrate these efforts with human production activities, including ecotourism.

He said these initiatives exemplify China's efforts to ensure that human production and natural conservation go hand in hand, showcasing a model of sustainable development.
