Recently, a newborn dolphin was sighted in the waters near Leizhou Bay, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong. Gray-black in color, it stayed closely by its mother's side throughout.
According to Lin Wenzhi, associate researcher at the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, this is the peak breeding season for Chinese white dolphins. This year, the team has recorded a total of 12 dolphin calves in the Leizhou Bay area. Newborn dolphins are dark gray, and then lighten as they grow; adults are pure white, often turning pink due to increased blood flow during exercise.
This dolphin is a flagship and indicator species of coastal marine ecosystems, serving as a "living barometer" for measuring the marine ecological environment.
The Chinese white dolphin is the mascot of the 15th National Games.
