Thai actress Usha Seamkhum reconnects with her Chaoshan roots in Chinese film "Dear You"

Thai actress Usha Seamkhum recently attended the Guangzhou premiere of the Chinese film "Dear You," in which she plays Grandma Nanzhi. The visit also marked her first trip to China.

Seamkhum rose to prominence last year for her role in the Thai film "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies", earning the affectionate nickname "Grandma Usha" among audiences.

In "Dear You," she took on the challenge of performing alongside co-stars speaking the Chaoshan dialect, relying on interpreters and physical expression to bring her character to life.

She also discovered a personal connection to the story. Her grandfather was among the many migrants from southern China's Chaoshan region who moved to Southeast Asia in the early 20th century.

"I've always felt that a part of me belongs to Chaoshan, to China," she said. "It's something awakened by blood ties."
