As Shenzhen gears up to host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2026, international journalists on the "Maritime Silk Road" media group tour have shared their early insights and expectations for the major global gathering. Their observations came during a visit organized by the South International Communication Center, where the coastal city's capacity to stage such an event became a topic of keen interest.
For many reporters from APEC members, Shenzhen represents a compelling choice as host. "Shenzhen will be a great host for APEC next year," said Hanni Sofia, a journalist from Indonesia's Antara News Agency, who plans to cover the event. She views the meeting as a pivotal moment not only for regional cooperation but also for her country's strategic position in the Asia-Pacific.
The city's modern and planned nature was highlighted as a particular advantage. Himanshu Bhatt Arunkumar from Malaysia's The Sun noted that Shenzhen is "a very new industrial city that has been thoughtfully designed and planned." He suggested that hosting a large-scale international event there could "inspire other existing cities, whether in China or overseas, everywhere in the world," emphasizing the importance of continuous development and maintaining global connections.
From a journalistic standpoint, several key themes emerged as focal points for future coverage. The economic agenda, particularly discussions on supply-chain resilience, digital trade, and the green transition, was cited as crucial for understanding how the region navigates global uncertainties. Beyond the formal agenda, there is a strong interest in the human stories behind the summit—how local businesses, young innovators, and communities in Shenzhen engage with and benefit from APEC. "These narratives often reveal dimensions that go beyond official statements," Sofia added, noting they make coverage more relatable to audiences back home.
