"China is already the de facto number one financial contributor to the UN regular budget. Even though in nominal terms, the US is number one, they're not paying," said China's UN Ambassador Fu Cong at a press conference recently held at the United Nations.
He emphasized Beijing's decades-long support for the UN's development pillar and for Global South countries.
"You can go to each and every African country to see how much China has helped to develop their economies and technologies," Fu said, stressing that China is not "filling the gap," but has been a consistent and long-term supporter of the UN.
He added that if the United States were to withdraw from the organization, other countries would naturally need to step up, including China.
