The "Shengnuo" lychee, a brand-new one, has been newly promoted for cultivation. It is a heart-shaped fruit with bright red skin. Its smooth and jade-like flesh is sweet, crisp, and soft, almost without fiber in every bite. Some say its name, "Shengnuo", carries the meaning of "sacred promise", symbolizing eternal love.
Another variety is the Pangzhai Black Leaf Lychee -- named after Pangzhai village, the origin of its cultivation. With leaves that are deep green, approaching dark, that's why this name was given. The lychee's firm flesh locks in moisture so well that even when shelled and wrapped in tissue overnight, the wrapping stays dry. Pangzhai Black Leaf Lychee has been cultivated for more than 500 years.
And there is also another variety called Xinxing Aroma Lychee, which is said to have taken root in this fertile land a thousand years ago. Slender in shape and rich in fragrance, this lychee is a famous specialty of Yunfu, one of the top ten excellent fruits in Lingnan, and a product bearing the China National Geographical Indication. As a tribute to ancient imperial courts, Xinxing Aroma Lychee was once exported to Moscow and received high acclaim at the Paris International Exposition. It is said that there is a tree of aroma lychee on the back hill of Guo'en Temple in Xinxing, which is known as the "Buddha Lychee".
