Ningxia, in Northwest China, is strengthening its reputation as a major wine-producing region. With 606,000 mu (about 40,400 hectares) of vineyards, the region accounts for more than 40 percent of China's total vineyard area. It also produces more than half of the country's winery-made wine, according to Kang Bo, deputy director general of the Administrative Committee of the Ningxia Helan Mountain's East Foothill Wine Industry Zone.
Kang said that Ningxia wineries have won more than 1,000 awards in recent years, with many producing signature wines recognized in international competitions. Looking ahead, the region plans to focus on developing boutique wineries with distinctive styles, while integrating wine with culture, tourism, sports and commerce to drive broader economic and social development.
