Guangdong film "Dear You" inspires Samoa minister and son with story of family

Chinese and foreign guests gathered in Apia on August 4 for a screening of the Chinese film Dear You together during the "2026 Charming China (Guangdong): Lingnan Culture Travels to the South Pacific" series.

Hon. Moefaauouo Julius Ah Kui Tafunai, Samoa's Minister for Family and Social Affairs, watched the film with his son and was deeply moved by its story. He spoke of his family's Chinese roots and highlighted the shared values that connect China and Samoa.

Dear You, a Teochew-dialect film centered on a family from Guangdong's Chaoshan region, has become one of China's biggest cinematic hits this year, claiming the top spot on the 2026 Chinese-language film chart in Malaysia and the 2026 Asian film box office chart in Singapore.
