From Canada to China: David's story of home in rural Guangdong | My Home in GBA ⑤

Visitors don't simply walk into David Klinck's restaurant. They ring the doorbell first, just as they would when visiting someone's home.

That's exactly how the Canadian wants it.

After 22 years in Guangdong, David has a simple way of describing what home means.

"Home is where you are."

His restaurant in Baisha, a small village in Qingyuan, is built around that idea. Much of the furniture once belonged to his father in Canada. Many of the dishes come from family recipes or meals shared by friends over the years. David never wanted to open a typical restaurant. He wanted guests to feel like they were stepping into someone's home.

For two decades, David lived in Guangzhou before moving to Baisha in search of a quieter life. Some might expect a restaurant in a small village to struggle for customers. David never did.

Thanks to the well-connected transport network across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), people regularly drive from Guangzhou, Foshan and other nearby cities to eat at his restaurant. For many, the journey is simply part of the experience.

But life here is about more than serving food.

David believes he was the first foreigner to settle in Baisha. Before long, the village began to feel familiar. He greets neighbors as he walks the streets. People stop to chat. Everyone knows his name.

For David, that's what makes a place feel like home. Not where you were born, but where people know you, welcome you, and where life simply feels right.

Editor's Note: Home is the starting point for every person, and the place where emotions return. With the vigorous development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, families here are painting a rich and vibrant picture of life along the surging Pearl River.

South has launched the series "My Home in GBA," stepping into the lives of families throughout the region to experience their everyday moments and feel the pulse of the Greater Bay Area together.
