"Every smartphone, every EV, now they are from China. Maybe it's from Guangdong," says Lin Zhenqiang, secretary-general of the Indonesia-China Friendship Association, in an interview during the "Guangdong Meets the Asia-Pacific · China Finds 'Guangdong Goods, Global Reach'" event in Jakarta on September 22.
Lin sees a clear shift in global perceptions of Chinese products. "Everything from China now is better than (that from) other countries in price, production and quality," he says. "Everything from China is better now. So this is good, and we have great development."
For Lin, the relationship is mutual. "China-wise, they need Indonesia as a market, and Indonesia-wise, they need the investment and also the opportunity to work together with China," he says. "Everything is on the right track."
He traces the connection back generations. "When our ancestors came here, the natives were very welcoming to us. So now we've become the natives, and then we are welcoming Chinese friends to come and invest in tourism and everything else." For Lin, this is more than trade—it is "people working and regenerating the history."
