"What impressed me most was witnessing a vibrant village where centuries-old traditions harmoniously coexist with contemporary life, where people work in shops along ancient streets, and modern cafes infuse new vitality into historic spaces," Sherry Stephenson, a member of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), remarked during her visit to an ancient village in Guangzhou, south China, on February 6.
Sherry Stephenson is here to attend the First Senior Officials' Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM1) of APEC China 2026, which are currently underway in Guangzhou from February 1 to 10.
During her field visit to Langtou Ancient Village in Huadu District, Stephenson expressed her surprise at discovering a community that has been continuously inhabited and thoughtfully revitalized. "In the U.S. and Europe, heritage sites are often preserved as static artifacts, but here you have managed to keep the past alive while seamlessly integrating modern aspects of daily life," she observed.
