Journalists from APEC economies go wild for Guangdong City Football Super League

On the evening of April 25, 2026, the Guangdong City Football Super League (Yue Chao) officially kicked off at Guangzhou's Yuexiushan Stadium, marking the start of a province-wide amateur football competition designed to boost grassroots sports engagement across the region.

Under the league's rules, no professional players are allowed to participate.

"I thought they were professional players. I can't imagine that they are actually teachers, firefighters, and people with other jobs, but they play like professionals," said Luki Aulia, a journalist from Kompas.

Fariza Rizky Ananda, a journalist from Kumparan, told South that she had never watched football in a stadium before. "The atmosphere was really good," she said.

"On the way to the stadium, I saw a lot of people in small groups dressed in unique clothes, all heading to the match together. It's so exciting to see sport bring people together to support their local team," said Josimar Elias, a journalist from Diario Gestion.
