Foreign vloggers experience Shanwei's fishing season as hundreds of boats set sail

At noon on August 16, hundreds of fishing boats sailed out from Shanwei, Guangdong, as the annual summer fishing moratorium came to an end.

With horns blaring and boats cutting through the blue waters, the entire fleet headed out to sea for the first catch of the new fishing season.

Invited by South, three foreign vloggers—Kris from the United States, Jean from Belgium and Kaya from Türkiye—captured the scene from the dock. They watched the fishing boats fade over the horizon amid the sound of horns and firecrackers.

Jean shared, "I 100 percent recommend that you come on this day to join the event."

Kris took part in the celebrations wearing traditional Shanwei clothing. The festival featured intangible cultural heritage performances, a marine jewellery show and a live connection to a modern marine ranch. Veteran shipwrights also shared stories about life at sea.

The proportion of Shanwei's coastal waters with good water quality has remained at 100 percent for years, nurturing high-quality seafood such as oysters and sea bream. The city is also developing modern marine ranches as a key part of its marine economy, and 65 projects have been planned along the full industrial chain, with a total investment exceeding 25 billion yuan.
