At the Malaysian premiere of Dear You on June 15, Goh Wan Sing, president of the Malaysia Teochew Chamber of Commerce, said the film authentically depicts the experiences of early overseas Chinese.
As a third-generation Malaysian Chinese whose grandfather emigrated from the Chaoshan region in Guangdong Province, China, more than a century ago, Goh recalled how his family used to send Qiaopi—historical documents combining letters, account records, and remittance receipts from overseas Chinese to their families.
"Our ancestral village is where our roots are. Our roots are in Chaoshan," he said.
The film's depiction of overseas Chinese returning home resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom were moved to tears.
The film will be released in Malaysia on June 18. As of June 15, its box office revenue has already reached 1.7 billion yuan.
