Guangdong launches new media platform to boost global reach

China's Guangdong launched a new media platform called South on July 3 to boost global reach.

The overhauled platform, the successor to GDToday under the Nanfang Media Group, spanning websites, apps (including WeChat channels), and overseas social media, now boasts more precise navigation, prominent sections, and a modern visual system designed to appeal to a global readership seeking news from southern China.

Now, South with an even bolder vision in its website and app will provide global users with more practical information and more engaging storytelling, aiming to become the world's window into Guangdong, a bridge between cultures, a leading regional hub for international communication in southern China, and a key media platform representing the Global South.

Service-oriented information is meticulously tailored for international settlers in Guangdong and global travelers, offering practical guides on business, travel, education, healthcare, local way of life, and more.

South will provide more eye-catching visual storytelling, including vivid photos, engaging posters, and cinematic short videos, showcasing the diversity of China, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and Guangdong to the globe. Besides, South will invite international users to deep local exploration, and dedicated city channels will allow them to explore all 21 cities of Guangdong.

South will continue cultivating connections and community for international settlers in the province, inviting expatriates to tap into an exciting ecosystem designed to help grow a global network by joining exclusive clubs, attending curated local cultural festivals, and meeting fellow expats at regular social gatherings.

Over the past dozens of years, Nanfang Media Group has set up a dedicated sector, GDToday, for international communication and has reached remarkable milestones. GDToday app downloads have surged to 300 thousand globally, while its social media family now spans over 7 million followers across WeChat, Facebook, X, TikTok, and more.
