Chinese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea (PNG) Yang Xiaoguang said he hopes more countries will stand with China on the one-China principle, after PNG's Minister for Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko reaffirmed his country's firm commitment to the principle at the launch ceremony of the "2026 Charming China (Guangdong): Lingnan Culture Travels to the South Pacific" event held in PNG on July 31.
"We therefore hope this sound decision by the PNG government will set an important example for other nations. More and more countries will uphold the one-China principle, and support the just stance of the Chinese government."
Ambassador Yang underscored that the one-China principle has been the political foundation of bilateral ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 50 years ago.
Over the years, the ambassador noted, the PNG government has consistently upheld the one-China principle and backed China's efforts to safeguard national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
PNG fully agrees with the one-China principle, opposes all "Taiwan independence" separatist activities, and supports all efforts by the Chinese government to advance national reunification, Yang said.
A particularly significant development, he pointed out, came just half a month ago when the PNG government publicly announced the closure of the Taipei Economic Office in PNG.
"This fully demonstrates PNG's firm stance on the one-China principle. It is also a friendly message sent to the Chinese people. It reflects PNG's positive will and official political position to steadily advance bilateral ties with China. We highly appreciate this."
He added that the move reflects a wider international consensus. "This also shows that the one-China principle is the trend of the times and the common aspiration of all peoples worldwide. Advocating 'Taiwan independence' wins no international support whatsoever. Pursuing separatism has no future."
