Six world-first smart enclosed marine aquaculture cages set sail from Huilai County in Jieyang, Guangdong, for Norway on September 11.
The cages were custom-developed for Norwegian company Seafarming Systems AS. Their end users are Lerøy and SalMar, two of the world's top three marine aquaculture companies, which will use them to farm Atlantic salmon in Norwegian waters.
Each circular cage has an outer diameter of 57.4 meters, stands 14 meters high and weighs 750 tons, with a water capacity of 70,000 cubic meters. It can be remotely controlled and operated without on-site staff, with an annual production capacity of 2,200 tons of salmon. The project cost about 120 million yuan and was completed in just six months.
A representative of Blueocean Wind, the manufacturer, said the project achieved breakthroughs in several key technologies and manufacturing processes. Construction involved major infrastructure including a 3,800-ton gantry crane and a deep-water basin capable of handling vessels of up to 40,000 tons.
