From June 11 to 13, at the APEC Economies China Studies Scholars Forum held in Guangdong, Duong Van Huy, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and Head of the International Cooperation Department at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, noted that Guangdong offers a blueprint for Vietnam's emerging industries and sustainable development.
He noted that as regional economic cooperation becomes a key focus ahead of this year's APEC meetings, Vietnam can learn from the development model of Guangdong, a pioneering Chinese province in reform, high-tech growth, and global integration.
"Guangdong is a pioneer in China's reform and opening-up, high-tech development, and integration into the world. Therefore, from Guangdong's development model, Vietnam can learn a lot," Duong Van Huy said.
He suggested that enterprises from Guangdong Province introduce their proven development models to Vietnam to foster deeper cross-border collaboration. In addition, he proposed two main tracks for cooperation: first, promoting direct partnerships between Guangdong and Vietnamese localities, and second, expanding the broader China-Vietnam strategic framework, particularly in emerging tech sectors and sustainability-related industries.
Duong also highlighted the growing role of regional platforms in facilitating knowledge exchange. "We have high expectations for this year's APEC meeting," he said. "Although the current world economic situation is relatively difficult, economic cooperation in Asia remains a highlight. Among them, the cooperation between China and other countries in the region is a hot spot."
He expressed his hope that APEC outcomes will help deepen economic cooperation among member economies, especially in sharing development models and mitigating risks.
On the technology front, Duong noted that China and Vietnam have long maintained close ties in the electronics sector, with many of Vietnam's imported electronic products coming from Guangdong.
"Guangdong is also a center for developing innovative electronic technologies," he said. "I believe there will be a higher level of development in the future, and the two sides can form an ecosystem for common development."
He added that Vietnam is now very keen to engage in technology transfer in the electronics sector, an area where China—and Guangdong in particular—has a distinct advantage.
