Around 3,500 protesters marched in the Philippine capital, Manila, on Sunday, demanding accountability for alleged corruption in government projects, particularly flood-control contracts, according to local media reports.
The demonstration drew members of the public, progressive organizations and civil society groups, among others. Organizers said the campaign seeks electoral reforms, transparent governance, greater accountability, and action against corruption and political dynasties.
The National Capital Region Police Office earlier said that nearly 10,000 personnel had been deployed to secure the event.
The protest came nearly a year after Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos ordered a review of flood control projects. In the second half of last year, a large-scale corruption scandal involving flood-control projects broke out, triggering sustained mass anti-corruption protests across the country.
