Yangchun, a city administered by Yangjiang, is nicknamed "Guangdong's Little Guilin" due to its karst landscape, limestone peaks, winding rivers and misty valleys. And Fish King Stone ranks among Yangchun's eight best-known sights.
Located in Lihu Village, Chuncheng Subdistrict, the Fish King Stone site features two stone pillars more than 100 meters high. Together, they resemble a giant yellow fish leaping from the river, and a natural cave runs through their base, known locally as the "bridge stone." By day, the views are picture-perfect, with green peaks mirrored in the clear Moyang River and wrapped in thin morning mist.
But the real show begins at sunset.
As the sun sinks, the sky turns orange, honey-gold and rose-pink, painting the rough stone surfaces with a fish-scale glow. The river looks like a still mirror, reflecting the dramatic silhouettes of the rocks and the colorful clouds. Small fishing boats drift back to shore, fishermen haul in their nets, bamboo rafts glide quietly and occasional folk songs float across the water while egrets skim the surface.
Fish King Stone is also one of Yangchun's main filming locations, and it is easy to find out why filmmakers are drawn to its twilight charm.
Tips for visitors
Best time: Arrive around 4 p.m. Spend an hour exploring, and then watch the sunset. The richest colors appear about 30 minutes after sunset, perfect for photo taking.
Top photo spots: The circular mountain trail at the foot of the rocks; the riverside mudflats.
More to do: Picnic or stroll on the grassy banks along the Moyang River, or set up a tent for stargazing and take in the slow pace of rural life. Please leave no trace.
What to bring: Sunscreen for the afternoon, as there is no shade by the river, and a light jacket for the breezy evening.
Admission: Free. Ideal for a short day trip or a relaxed overnight stay.
